Mahall’s is rocking, giving Lakewood a big business boost - Cleveland Business News - Northeast Ohio and Cleveland - Crain's Cleveland Business By MICHELLE PARK LAZETTE 4:30 am, October 27, 2013
It's Saturday night on Madison Avenue in Lakewood, and people are bowling, drinking beer from Mason jars at one bar, listening to a free performance near another, ordering fried chicken and burgers from a counter and swaying to the pulsing performance of a band from Detroit.
And, all of them and all of it are under one roof at a place that has seen such a revival that one city official says this venue, which two years ago was a sleepy, underused bowling alley, is a big contributor to the ‘burgeoning renaissance’ of a city corridor.
Founded in 1924 and marked by an old bowling pin sign, Mahall's 20 Lanes faced its share of challenges in recent years. Ohio's indoor smoking ban caused a drop in business, and the Mahall family didn't have the capital necessary to make upgrades to draw a younger crowd while maintaining the roughly 25,000-square-foot building, said Rebecca V. Mahall, whose great-grandfather opened the business. "
