Article: A farewell to the Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern

Thought I’d post this remembrance from the CWRU Observer.  Lots of shows played at this location, I wish I could have attended more… 

"‘We’ve had over 775 different bands play here. Some of them have played more than once, so that’s over 1,250 gigs. Add to that over a hundred poetry events, the dozens of science talks that we did with the Institute for the Science of Origins, and the author talks we did with Literary Cleveland and the East Cleveland Public Library,’ said Watterson. ‘I’m proud of the stuff we did.’

He plans to carry over some of the events, such as the regular poetry shows and monthly bluegrass jam to the West Side Happy Dog.

Watterson said University Circle Inc. plans to preserve the tavern. Happy Dog is working with the development corporation to ensure that whoever takes over the space will have access to the venue’s concert stage and its sound system."

The Van Allen Belt (1/6/17)

FINALLY.  I made it to a proper concert at the Euclid Tavern (now The Happy Dog at the Euclid Tavern).  I’ll admit, I was getting a little desperate to see a show, I was was really digging into the local venue calendars looking for something.  Thankfully I found The Van Allen Belt performing at the Euclid Tavern.  I’ve been wanting to see a proper show here for years!

We started off the night with the MIX at CMA party - again another first.  Then dinner at Ninja City (amazing!), and then we were able to catch The Van Allen Belt as they were just about to take the middle slot for the night, so we caught them just in time.  They’re hard to describe, even by their own words: "The Van Allen Belt is impossible to categorize, luscious to listen to. This isn't your typical trippy, psychedelic music ― this is unique.”  Check them out for yourself!

 

A Night Out in University Circle (5/1/15)

I’m not necessarily titling this post as a particular band - as my sister was visiting and we just happened to be hopping around University Circle.  Wed stopped in to the Barking Spider Tavern and the Happy Dog at Euclid Tavern.  

I finally saw a show at the Euclid Tavern!!  Performing this night was My Light We Loom, Marcus Alan Ward, and Nonaphoenix.  I kinda liked Nonaphoenix!

Happy Dog at The Euclid Tavern Opens Today!!

Finally!!  …and very exciting.

Here is a superb piece on The Happy Dog opening up the venerable Euclid Tavern - and the importance that Derek Hess had on it’s history, both of the venue and the city’s music scene.  I love how his art was central to the venue’s success.

Sean Watterson, the owner of the Happy Dog in the Gordon Square Arts District of Cleveland, is bringing his popular combination of food and entertainment to a shuttered University Circle hot-spot the Euclid Tavern. ‘The Euc,’ was once the spot for blues and rock and roll in the region, attracting musicians Chrissie Hynde, Mr. Stress, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Joan Jett, and in 1987, Michael J. Fox in the film, ‘Light of Day.’ We sit down with the man who’s out to bring the ‘Euc’ back."

Tomorrow: Canon Logic @ Euclid Tavern

Wow, this is my first recommendation for a Euclid Tavern show!   One of my great Cleveland disappointments was not getting here in time to see a show in the old tavern.  Piss soaked floors?? Bring it on...  OK not really, but I would have loved to have gone to at least one show there.  Now's my chance to finally see a show in the new one...  The only hiccup is Those Darlins over at the Grog Shop.  I really want to see them, but I think the allure of the Euc is bringing me there.  Oh, and Canon Logic. They have a big rock sound, sorta like Killers or Snow Patrol.  It's not the easiest sound to pull off, but I think these guys do it well.  Check them out:

Some comments about their sound from their recent full-length release:

In the Spring of 2010 Canon Logic released their first full-length effort, FM Arcade, an eclectic album of powerfully catchy pop songs. Converse’s Talk Blog said "FM Arcade is rife with slick musical structures and beautiful, clear vocals.” Achieving a growing popularity in their native NYC, supporting acts like Oh Land and the Lemonheads, and headlining Bowery Ballroom, they broadened their reach up and down the East Coast on tour, and the songs stretched even further, landing placements on CSI:NY, internet ad campaigns, and on Hollister Co. and affiliated stores’ playlists, nationwide.

Now, I have no idea what time these guys might go on.  I might need to call the venue.
