DAR WILLIAMS TO RELEASE “MANY GREAT COMPANIONS” OCTOBER 12^TH
We are excited to announce that Dar will be releasing her 8^th studio album on October 12th, 2010 titled Many Great Companions.  The new set features twelve of Dar’s classics newly recorded and interpreted acoustically with special guests including Sean and Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Gary Louris of The Jayhawks (who produced the acoustic recordings), Motherlode, and Patty Larkin. The album also includes an additional disc containing twenty of Dar’s greatest original studio recordings from 1993’s The Honesty Room through 2008’s Promised Land. Spangler Roger Zender is back for his monthly dose of the best concerts in town and around the region.

"It's hard to believe October is already here. While this month is a little light on the number of shows, that's not to say there aren't some phenomenal options. Both featured events this month have really strong openers that are as worthy as the headlining acts.

October also has some strong road trips worth considering. This month also introduces the first installment of the Princeton Road Sessions house concert series, so this month is pretty special."

Indie Sup Pop Considers Radical New Sales Model: Pay For The Toy And We'll Give You The Music Free - hypebot

"From early Nirvana through Mudhoney and on to Fleet Foxes and The Postal

Service, indie label Sup Pop has been putting out interesting and often fabulous music for decades.  But just like the rest of the recorded music industry, they're having trouble these days getting people to pay for it.

To combat the problem, the venerable indie label is considering flipping the basic music sales proposition on its head. 'Although Sub Pop is primarily known for its many fine artists and their really very fine recordings (also grunge), we're not at all opposed to expanding into the fine world of t-shirts, hats, beer cozies, and key chains,' says Sub Pop general manager, Megan Jasper. 'We used to give many of these tchotchke items away for free in an effort to entice people to pay for the music, but we're considering flipping our strategy so that people pay for the toy and receive the music for free.

Indie bands have already been experimenting with the concept of bundling downloads with a physical item, but this would be the first time that a substantial label made the shift."

Basia Bulat (9/29/10)

What an awesome night!  I knew I wanted to get to this show early to see my new local favorites, The Modern Electric.  I saw them open for Deer Tick at one of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Summer Concert Series, and have been anxiously waiting for the chance to see them again.  I could have asked for a better scenario.  Garrett Komyati has some stellar vocals that, even without a great band and great songs, would be worthy of noting.  But fortunately, The Modern Electric has all of that.  Cleveland should be proud.

The Acorn was up next.  They were good, definitely an experienced band with a polished sound.  While they seemed like a fun group of guys, their music was a bit too serious.

Over the last couple days, I felt like each time I heard Basia Bulat's album, I liked it exponentially more.  Now triple that since seeing her in concert... She has an absolutley *STUNNING* voice.  An amazing personality, a great band, blah blah blah.  Just an awesome performer... as you can see for yourself (as best video allows):

The Hundred in the Hands

Have you picked up the new The Hundred in the Hands album yet?  I've been loving it lately....  Also, they're (surprisingly) the first openers for The Thermals show next Friday (Oct. 8th) - so go early!

Menomena (9/27/10)

Oh work... you keep me grounded.  Last night, Menomena performed in Cleveland (at the Beachland), for the first time in a while.  We (luckily) got there in time for the end of the Suckers performance.  That lead singer had a touch of the crazy - but it worked for them/him. I hadn't planned on catching these guys play, but i'm definitely intrigued.

A darling of Music Saves (who received a shout-out from the band), Menomena is definitely a solid music act - only proving their good taste.  Throwing in some eccentricities, like saxophones and moraccas, they effortlessly demonstrate their mature and much appreciated sound - as demonstrated by the excited audience.  I didn't stay for the whole night, but enjoyed what I saw. When they come back (and I'm sure they will), I'll be better prepared.
