Tomorrow: Shovels & Rope @ Beachland Tavern

At the same time as Dan Deacon, Shovels & Rope will be performing their gristly alt-country in the Tavern.  Perfect venue for them!  I've been listening to their new album O' Be Joyful and it's great!  Also, opening is Roger Hoover's next incarnation, Roger Hoover & the Hurt - a great regional musician who I'm *thrilled* to get to see again.  A great night of Americana.

Tomorrow: Dan Deacon @ Beachland Ballroom

Beachland will be HAPPENING tomorrow night!  First off, in the Ballroom is Dan Deacon, who if you haven't heard all the buzz yet, he's turning heads with his new release America.  Check out his superb explanation of it right here.

Dandeacon portrait2

"In the past nine years Dan Deacon has released nine LPs, scored music for films and the stage, curated film festivals, been the figurehead of a Baltimore artist collective, and developed a reputation as one of the most energetic D.I.Y. live performers currently touring. When you hear Dan Deacon, you know it's Dan Deacon. It's hard to imagine where the unique musician could go from here. Last year, Deacon turned 30 and, with his new album America, moved toward a perspective of maturity and lofty concepts. The product of his artistic growth is not one that is radically different from his previous works, but rather is a honing of his quintessential sound with care. On America, Deacon creates his most mature work to date: an ode to his home country that is full of sonic beauty, destructive chaos and ecstatic fun. "

This first one will spoil you. Major Lazer’s new video for the Amber Coffman (of Dirty Projectors fame) featuring ‘Get Free. Stunning track.  Next… EST for Life… swoon.  Finally Grimes' Genesis.  Wait for it…

While I like Diplo, this bonus is all about the video.

Tomorrow-ish: Sharon Van Etten @ Rock Hall (FREE SHOW)

Tomorrow night closes out the Summer in the City concert series by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  Really looking forward to seeing Sharon Van Etten.  I've been checking her out lately and like her stuff (check it out below).  Not quite sure how she'll fill that space, but I hope she does.

Best Tribute Ever? Red Hot + Arthur Russell

This sounds amazing… Hot Chip! Scissor Sisters!! Cut Copy!!! Robyn!!!!

Robyn, Twin Shadow, Washed Out Set For Red Hot Arthur Russell Tribute LP - Stereogum

" Arthur Russell blended dance, folk, pop, classical, whatever, and created something utterly unique and extraordinary. He died of AIDS in 1992, at age 40, but his profile has risen considerably over the last two decades; frankly, I’d guess that a majority of the artists covered by Stereogum would cite him as an influence. So it’s appropriate and very cool to see so many of those artists will be featured on an upcoming Arthur Russell tribute album called Red Hot + Arthur Russell: This Is How We Walk On The Moon.

On board already to cover Russell’s songs are Twin Shadow, Washed Out, José González, Laurel Halo, Robyn, Glen Hansard, Javelin, Hot Chip, Nico Muhly + Owen Pallett, Cut Copy, Sandro Perri, The Revival Hour, Will Sheff, Sam Amidon, Ólöf Arnalds, Devendra Banhart, Dan Boeckner, Chad VanGaalen, Scissor Sisters, Oh Mercy, Rubblebucket, and Thao with The Get Down Stay Down. The project was organized by Red Hot, in association with Pitchfork."

Tomorrow: Ezra Furman @ Beachland Tavern

omg.  This is definitely my show of the month.  I've seen Ezra Furmantwicenow at the Beachland Tavern and I couldn't be more excited for this one ($10).  His new album, The Year of No Returning, is his best effort yet - and I think Music. Defined. would agree.  Check it out below.

Bill Staines (8/5/12)

Being a completionist here.  Supporting a friend by attending a performance for her employer - the fancy-pants Laurel School system, which has an incredible space out in Geauga County.  A great night with friends, food, drink, and the light-hearted folk stylings of Bill Staines.

The Modern Electric (8/3/12)

This was really the week for music…  I skipped the Rufus Wainwright show to bike up to Cain Park to see local-wonders, The Modern Electric.  Wow, these boys keep getting better and better.  Only one complaint - NEW MUSIC PLEASE!!  I can't wait to hear some new stuff…

The Modern Electric (8/3/12)

I didn't catch any video, but you can see some of them from the Cellar Door opening event.
