Elliott BROOD (1/15/15)

This show was a little light on the openers (both local acts I’ve not heard of), so that wasn’t helping the crowd on this Thursday night - but that didn’t stop Elliott Brood from putting on an excellent show (i.e. it wasn’t too awkward).  These guys have so many good songs, it was hard for me to only record a few.  Their rootsy, indie-rock style would also be perfect for the Beachland Tavern next time these guys are in town (which I hope is soon!).  DAKS: 8

Video Day #tzaupbeat

Starting off with my new favorite Belle & Sebastian song, The Party Line. Generations have a delicious new video for Reviver.  And then Sleater-Kinney has a new star-studded video(?) for No Cities to Love.

Bonus: It’s only a lyric video, but Cazwell’s Don’t Get It Twisted (feat. Nicky Da B) is totally worth sharing.

Tonight: Elliott Brood @ Grog Shop

Brood

The origins of my time with Elliott Brood are a little sketchy... I really fell for these guys on their Days Into Years album, but had some earlier stuff, and I’ve been really liking their newly released Work & Love.  These guys have quickly jumped to the ranks of Blitzen Trapper or Ryan Adams for me.  They don’t have many official videos though, but here’s a newer “live” video, and an older official one:

Oh, and here’s their performance on KEXP:

Video Day #tzachill

First up is First Aid Kit’s Master Pretender.  Continuing with animation is Panda Bear’s Boys Latin - with a  rather mesmerizing video.  Finally is our own Modern Electric with Great Expectations.

Bonus: If you surprisingly haven’t already seen this yet - Sia recruits Shia LaBeouf and re-recruits the young dancer from Chandelier for her captivating new video for Elastic Heart.

Tomorrow: The Duhks @ Happy Days Lodge

Tomorrow night kicks of the Conservancy Series Concerts at the Happy Days Lodge in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  It’s a *great* place to see a show.  The Duhks have been around for quite a while and are accurately described as an "Appalachian-styled string band that fuses eclectic modern sounds with a traditional roots approach.” (from allmusic.com).  Sounds perfect for this space, at this time of year.

There’s not many professional videos out there of these guys, but this should do.

Here’s the rest of the Conservancy lineup!

Video Day #tzaupbeat

Some GREAT stuff here… Rustie has an illuminating new video for Lost.  Australia’s San Cisco is prepping for a new album in March with a new video for RUN.  I just discovered Shamir’s On the Regular and I’m already in love.

Bonus:  A new Royksopp video for Skulls

Erika Hughes & the Well Mannered (1/9/15)

What a great way to start a new year of live music!  A friend mentioned a show at the Barking Spider, which is what tipped me off to this particular night.  I recruited a friend and we made it a night in Uptown, first having dinner at the Happy Dog @ the Euclid Tavern (still waiting to catch my first show there!).  We then bared the bitter cold to the Barking Spider, though I truly enjoy a snowy evening at the Spider as much I enjoy Summer nights.

Erika Hughes and the Well Mannered were a group of young musicians from Columbus, OH, though they sounded years beyond their age = superb.  They had an incredible multi-instrumentalist, but that was rivaled by having two strong female vocals.  Oh did I mention they had an upright bass and a full drum set.  This band was packing, and they knew how to play.  The crowd was quite receptive and made for an incredible night of live music.

Video Day #tzachill

Dan Deacon has a new video for Feel the Lightning off his upcoming new album (2/24). Belle & Sebastian’s deeply personal video for Nobody’s Empire. And speaking of personal, Marina & the Diamonds go deep for Immortality.

Bonus: Asher Roth goes video-retro for his Be Right Video.
